Improve our support systems
This year’s theme for World Down Syndrome Day (21st March 2025) is Improve Our Support Systems and it highlights a critical issue. Many people with Down syndrome around the world do not receive the support they need to live fulfilling, independent lives. In some countries, adequate support systems do not exist. In others, existing structures fail to uphold the human rights of people with disabilities.
A good support system must be more than just available—it must be effective, inclusive, and respectful. Support should not be a privilege but a right, enabling people with Down syndrome to fully participate in society, pursue employment, take on responsibilities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Governments and organisations must ensure that support systems are:
- Person-centred – Tailored to the individual’s needs, aspirations, and strengths.
- Inclusive – Ensuring equal access to employment, education, and community participation.
- Respectful – Upholding the rights and dignity of people with Down syndrome, seeing them as capable and valued members of society.
- Accessible – Easy to navigate and available to those who need it most.
The need for change – Owen’s story
Owen, from our Croft Community, powerfully expresses this in his poem I’m as good as. His words challenge perceptions, reinforcing that people with Down syndrome deserve the same opportunities as anyone else:
Owen’s poem is a reminder that with the right support, individuals with Down syndrome can thrive in workplaces, social enterprises, and community roles. It is not a question of ability—it is a question of opportunity.
Making inclusion a reality
At Camphill Village Trust, we see firsthand the impact of a strong support system. Whether through employment opportunities in our social enterprises, participation in our nature-based activities through our Green Care programme, or supported living options, we believe in creating environments where people with Down syndrome are recognised for their contributions.
However, there is more work to be done. To truly Improve Our Support Systems, we call for:
- Investment in inclusive employment programmes, ensuring real work opportunities for people with Down syndrome.
- Greater recognition of supported living models, enabling independent, dignified lifestyles.
- Education and training for businesses and employers, so everyone understands the value and capability of employees with Down syndrome.
- A shift in public attitudes, moving away from limitations and towards possibilities.
This World Down Syndrome Day, let’s take action. Let’s work towards a world where every person with Down syndrome is seen, heard, and supported to achieve their full potential.
