Celebrating 70 Years of Camphill Village Trust
This year, we’re proudly celebrating seven decades of Camphill Village Trust. Over these years, we’ve seen our communities flourish, and our mission grow. Here are five unique and little-known facts about the Trust’s remarkable history:
1. The Birthplace of Jenga: Believe it or not, Jenga has its origins here! In the early 1980s, the Botton woodworking shop was approached by the creator of Jenga to manufacture the blocks for the stacking tower game. Botton agreed to make 100 sets, but did not want to commit to a large commercial venture. The Botton sets were sold in Harrods, and it was the display of one of these at a toy fair that brought the game to the attention of Hasbro.
2. Our Very Own Rose: We’re delighted to have a rose registered with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in our name. The “Camphill Glory” rose represents our dedication to nurturing communities where all can thrive.
3. Championing Mental Health: Mental health has always been central to our work. Our early efforts to raise awareness contributed to the founding of Mental Health Awareness Week, a key moment in the calendar for reflection, understanding, and advocacy.
4. Handmade Waldorf Dolls: In Botton Village, our talented craftspeople created and sold beautiful Waldorf dolls, cherished for their natural materials and gentle features, beloved by families and children.
5. We Have a BAFTA: Yes, we’re an award-winning organisation! Our short film “Getting to Know You,” which gives an insight into life in our communities, earned a BAFTA award, bringing awareness to the incredible stories of those we support.
From iconic games to award-winning films, each of these facts tells a story of dedication, creativity, and impact. Here’s to 70 years of enriching lives, and to many more years of community and opportunity.
